Diving into James Joyce’s Ulysses is both daunting and exhilarating. This will be third time lucky having read to the halfway point twice.

As a lover of complex literature, I revel in untangling the dense, poetic prose of this masterpiece. Each page is a puzzle, each sentence a challenge, offering a rewarding intellectual workout.

The joy of reading Ulysses is amplified when shared with others so I am delighted to be joining Listen With Audrey’s readalong (over on Insta) which has been exquisitely curated with illustrations, manageable schedules and expert advice provided.

Discussing Ulysses’ rich tapestry of allusions, stream-of-consciousness passages, and intricate wordplay with fellow enthusiasts brings new dimensions to the text and I know I’ll discover interpretations and insights I might have otherwise missed on my own. It’s like exploring a vast, intricate maze with a group of intrepid adventurers, each contributing their unique perspective.

Listening to Ulysses read aloud will be a first time experience for me and I know from last time I found myself reading the words to an audience of me, myself and I because to do so added another layer of reading bliss. The musicality of Joyce’s language and the rhythm of his prose come alive when it’s lifted from the page: enhancing its poetic beauty.

Ulysses offers a profound sense of accomplishment and joy, showcasing literature’s power to expand our minds, challenge perceptions, and connect us with others in a shared quest for understanding. It’s the stuff of dreams and with the summer holidays fast approaching I can think of nothing better than working slowly but steadily through this voyage of linguistically lavish literature with my bookish friends by my side.

Bloomsday is tomorrow and I always wonder how Joyce may have reacted to knowing how respected his writing is.
