Bookish thoughts: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by ‘The Queen’ Agatha Christie
This is my second journey into Agatha Christie’s crime-ridden world and once again I’ve been swept away by the 👸🏻 Queen of suspense.
Like The Murder at the Vicarage, this story weaved a web of mystery, misdirection and surprise which left me captivated until the very last page. The subject matter should leave me unsettled but quite the opposite. I feel excited all day, at the moment, to imagine the moment I have a bubbly bath and retire to a Christie book with my cat joining me for the adventure. Together, we attempt to work out the dastardly being who has reeked murderous carnage in sleepy village life.
Suspects galore, red herrings galore….one minute I thought it was one person and the next Poirot poo-pooed it or left his thoughts on a cliff hanger as he considered his next move. What a pleasure to meet Hercule Poirot for the first time. His eccentricity acts as a ruse to others that he isn’t as on the ball as he is. Pure genius!
Reading this book was such a joy and a true form of escapism. Christie has an unparalleled knack for creating atmospheric settings and complex characters that feel both grounded and larger-than-life. There’s a timeless quality to her writing that draws you in, making you forget the world around you as you become absorbed in the puzzle at hand.
As my second foray into Christie’s world, this book has left me eagerly anticipating what’s next in her extensive catalogue. It’s clear that Christie’s genius lies not only in her ability to craft intricate plots but also in her understanding of human nature, her knack for dialogue, and her remarkable sense of pacing.
I’m loving my bookish life currently! 🥹
